What is a capacitor:-

One of the most common issues with pool pumps is a capacitor failure. The capacitor is like the starte motor for your pool pump. When the pump is turned on stored power from the capacitor delivers a charge of power to the start windings which gives the motor the momentum to run on.  

How can you tell it may be a capacitor causing the issue? 

The symptoms of a faulty or blown Capacitor is fairly easy identify if you know what you are looking for.  The two main ones are:-

1. Pool pump motor is humming on start up
2. Burnt chenical smell coming from the motor kit box.

Now there are a few fault finding techniques that can easily identify if it is a capacitor issue or if it is something lodged in the pool pumps impeller which is causing the humming noise. 

Can I replace the capacitor myself? 

The capcitor is a part of the pool pumps motor which is a 240V electrical appliance.  By law you need to be a qualified electrical repair technician to replace a capacitor.  It is dangerous to replace a capacitor as they can continue to hold charge when damaged. This charge is highly dangerous and can cause serious injury to anyone who lacks the experience to carry out the repair safely.
